Monthly must-haves

Guys, I am going to have a little period chat with you today. Mostly because it still makes people squirm when the topic is brought up and I really think that needs to change. We – both men and women – should be able to talk about that time of the month and the monthly must-haves that we need without feeling ashamed. It is, after all, natural.

Talking about your period is still so taboo, and there is a real stigma around the topic. Which is bizarre, as women go through it every month as a way to make another human. We kind of couldn’t do that without it. Weirdly.

There have been many amazing and prominent woman who have talked about their period – including numerous celebrities – and there was the incredible menstruation-themed photo series – aptly named Period – by Rupi Kaur (that was censored by Instagram on a number of occasions), that was “a photo series developed by rupi for a visual rhetoric course in her final year at university.  The goal was to challenge a taboo, tell a story without the use of words.” Love it!

Anyway, today I am going to talk about the products that I need and buy every month during my period, as well as include some amazing products that I have on my monthly period wish list! Ready to talk about your/my/our monthly blood bath? (Too far? Oh well, that’s what it feels like at the beginning of my period). Let’s go!

My Monthly Must-Haves:

1. Tampax Tampons (with applicators).

Even as a 26-year old woman, I still cannot insert a God-dam tampon without an applicator. Seriously, I waddle like a penguin if I do not use an applicator. It just doesn’t, you know, sit in the right place. Anyway, I have tried almost every brand of tampon there is, and Tampax just works best with my body and my flow. You can get these in all sizes for all flows from Clicks and Dischem.

2. Lil-Lets Intimate Care Feminine Wipes (Aloe 20 Wipes).

After I received a pack of intimate feminine wipes from an event earlier this year, I have used them on my period every month since. The original wipes that I received were Comfite Flushable Feminine Wipes, but I could not find them anywhere, so I have started using Lil-Lets Intimate Care Feminine Wipes from Clicks instead.

They are just as good as the Comfite brand and they smell so lovely, making me feel super fresh every day I am on my period, which is great because – I am sure all women will agree with me – you feel the furthest thing from fresh during that time of the month.

3. Scented Pantyliners.

Another way I keep myself feeling fresh at the end of my period, when I am spotting, is by using Scented Pantyliners. They fit securely and are just absorbent enough for spotting, which is great, and stops that uncomfortable feeling of using a tampon at the end of your period. There are a number of brands that make scented pantyliners, including Clicks‘ own brand and Lil-Lets.

4. Panado.

There is nothing that helps more for my horrific cramps (and I mean horrific cramps, fuck my life it gets that bad that I want to reach on inside there and pull out all the baby-making parts) than good ol’ Panado.

I usually buy a container of 24 tablets and that lasts a couple of months. I suffer from really super bad cramps, so much so that I usually end up doubled over, so I have to have pain killers on hand for when the bomb drops.

Note: I usually have to track my period in order to start taking Panado well before I start my period (normally the day before) so that I can avoid the cramps from getting unbearable from the very beginning. I also tend to keep a hot water bottle at home and at work so that I can place it on my tummy to ease the pain.

5. Clue App.

I saw this amazing little app in a YouTube video by Theodora Lee, and I downloaded it right there on the spot without a second thought. I used it this month for the first time, and it enables me (and would enable you) to track everything from my bleeding/flow to my pain level, my emotions to my sleep pattern, and so many more options (of which you can choose and customise).

Additionally, Clue also allows you to track your ovulation period and allows you to get to know your body, which I am always keen to do! I look forward to using it every month from now on.

Now for some amazing products that I would love to indulge in every month and have yet to try:

1. Every28.

Every28 is an amazing monthly service that sends their customers a box of essentials (that they choose) plus a delicious sweet treat right to their door every month, just in time for their period. What’s more, 10% of sales go to the 28Reasons charity that uses the money to buy surplus items to send to underprivileged children who do not attend school during their period.

2. Reusable Sanitary Products.

There have been a number of reusable sanitary products produced over the last few years, but I have yet to try one. There is the Moon Cup and the Mpower Mcup, to name only a couple, both of which are a menstrual management solution for women that can be reused time and time again saving both the planet and a bit of cash! I am so very eager to try one of these.

What products do you used during your period each month? Are there any that you feel I should know about? I would love to hear from you! Leave a comment in the comment box below.

I agree with Khanyisana. A chocolate needs to be added. I’ve been tracking my cycle using P Tracker for the last 3/4 year and it’s quite good

I would add a bar of chocolate to this! My period always comes with crazy cravings.
Personally, I prefer kotex tampons. The applicator never works with me hey.

The intimate care feminine wipes are essential. They really help with that gross feeling during that time of the month

I really could not agree more, Cherice. I don’t know what I would do without them.
