The Aussie original, Skinny Tan, has finally hit South African soil, and I have ben lucky enough to be sent a delightful box filled to the brim with Skinny Tan products to review!
I have never used self-tanning products before, and I am usually pale as a sheet during summer because I avoid the sun at all costs. Covering up in factor 50 sun screen, wearing t-shirts and big hats are just a couple of tricks that keep me from getting sun burnt. But I am tired of being milky during summer while all the beach babes have golden tans that are to die for.
This got me thinking, why don’t I brave it and try out a self-tanning product or two and see what the outcome is. What’s the worst that can happen? Okay, I am having visions of me looking like one of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’s Oompa Loompa’s. Oh, that’s a cringy thought.
To my absolute delight, I recently had a very heavy, glossy box delivered to my office from Skinny Tan! And I was so eager to get trying out the array of products I found inside.
Want to know what was in the box? So, the glorious, amazing and very full box of goodies that landed on my desk included:
- 24-Hour Bronzer – An instant bronzing gloss with Guarana and hydrating oils for face and body. (R320)
- Body Mousse – A long lasting self-tanning mousse with natural tanning active plus Guarana.
- After Glow – A gorgeous finishing gloss that hydrates your skin and extends the life of your tan.
- Gradual Tanner – A gradual self-tanning moisturiser using a naturally derived tanning agent plus Guarana. (R320)
- Pre-Tan Primer – Body derision smooths skin for perfect tanner application and reduces the appearance of blemishes.
- 7-Day Tanner – An instant lasting self-tanner with a naturally derived tanning agent and Guarana. (R395)
- Skinny Tan & Toning Oil – A hydrating self-tanner with skin smoothing oils and firming guarana.
- Skinny Tan Mini Mitt – Precision tanning application mitt for the dace and small areas.
- Tanning Mitt – Allows you to achieve a streak-free, natural, even looking tan with no mess.
And today I am going to try out the Pre-Tan Primer (which gets rid of those pesky dead skin cells and makes your tan last longer) and the 7-Day Tanner, as I want to see the immediate results given by this product.
I will use and review a couple of the other products during summer, and put up another post about my thoughts and the results.
But first, I am going to tell you a little more about Skinny Tan. Let’s go.
About Skinny Tan
Skinny Tan is the first self-tanner that includes the combination of a natural tanning active with naturally derived skin smoothing actives, both of which provide users with a visible tan while contouring the body and reducing the visible appearance of cellulite.
Nothing but salon-quality, Skinny Tan self-tanner gives your skin instant colour that develops over time into a deeper colour that lasts for up to seven days.
The best part about Skinny Tan, however, is that its colour is so natural that it is indistinguishable from a real tan. What’s more, because its made from nothing but the highest quality naturally derived tanning actives, Skinny Tan won’t irritate or dry out your skin.
My First Self-Tanning Experience
Step 1: Exfoliation
I grabbed the bottle of Pre-Tan Primer – which smells like coconuts and bliss – and jumped in the shower. Squeezing smalls amount on my hand, I started to rub the exfoliator into my skin, making sure to pay special attention to my knees, elbows and ankles like the packaging said.
Once complete, I dried off and waited for a few hours before I started – with lots of help from Jeanne – to apply the 7-Day Tanner. I have to admit, my skin felt so smooth and smelt so delicious. Love, love, love the Pre-Tan Primer, and would choose to use it as an exfoliator whether I am going to use a tanning product afterwards or not.
Step 2: Let the tanning begin!
I am going to admit, I was really hesitant about applying the self-tan when I squeezed the first application out of the bottle, mainly because it was so dark and my skin is so incredibly light. However, I re-read the box and felt satisfied when it said that it won’t in fact come out that dark – phew!
I started by squeezing small amounts of the self-tan onto the Tanning Mitt, and then applying it carefully to my legs and my left arm befogging roping in Jeanne to help me apply it to my stomach, right arm, back and my face – yup, my face.
Now I had to wait for five hours (or longer if I wanted it darker, but I think for my first time, five hours is plenty!) and then wash it off with nothing but water.
Note: Firstly, I washed off my face and neck at four hours as it started to look a little bit dark, but once it was washed off it was the perfect colour. Secondly, I think that I applied a little too much product (as the bottle, surprisingly, says that there is up to 6 applications in one bottle! Not bad for the price at all, as that means your bottle can last up to six weeks).
Step 3: The Outcome
I. Am. So. Brown! Okay, not brown, brown, but naturally brown like I have been sitting in the sun for a couple of hours. I am so pleased with the outcome of my first Skinny Tan self-tan, I feel ready for my summer wardrobe.
The one thing I have noticed, other than my golden brown-ness, is how soft and firm my skin feels after I washed off the application. The firm-ness, to be honest, has made me feel so much more comfortable and confident about my legs already (as they are one of the parts of my body that I am not overly fond of), and I might be purchasing a pair of short-shorts to show them off!
Another thing I noticed about my tan is that there are no streaks to be found! I really thought that there might be a streak or too where I applied a little too much products, but I was wrong. Freaking amazing.
So, the big question: “would I purchase and continue to use Skinny Tan products in the future?”. My answer is a big, big yes! I have already been thinking about looking gorgeously brown at my sister-in-law’s wedding in December in my lovely summer dress, and about how gorgeously brown I will be looking at my own wedding next year!
I am going to continue to use the products sent to me to upkeep my tan until December for the wedding, and will be purchasing more in order to stay brown for the rest of summer.
I have a mousse and gradual tanner in my lovely Skinny Tan drop, and when I use them I will be sure to update this post with my experience with the additional two products, as they work differently.
My last thought is that I am glad that I did not come out super brown. My worst nightmare would be getting in the shower and starting to wash off the application only to look in the mirror and be five shades dark (or worse, bright orange and streaky).
At least I now know that if I continue to use the Skinny Tan products I can build up a tan that is brown enough for me and I do not need to be scared of it coming out looking the furthest thing from natural!
So, here is what I look like now after my Skinny Tan application. (Note: I know the pictures do not show a drastic change, but I was milky white, and I have a lovely subtle bronze glow now which I am sure will become slightly darker on next application. I will be re-applying next weekend to keep on top of it, as I do not want my tan to fade).
I would just like to thank Skinny Tan for the amazing products and turning me into a self-tan believer! I am in love with your brand and your products and have been fully converted.
Skinny Tan is available at Dis-Chem Pharmacies, selected Clicks stores, Wellness Warehouse and leading independent pharmacies and salons.
