My top five favourite podcasts

I take the bus to work and back home in the mornings and evenings, and the journeys can be long (if i’m tired), loud, and boring. How do I combat that boredom? With a long list of my fave podcasts, that’s how!

I was late to the podcast trend. I didn’t really know what they were, and when I did, I wasn’t particularly interested in the idea as I didn’t think they sounded very interesting.

However, after listening to the same music on my phone for two months I couldn’t take it anymore, and decided it was time to dive into the world of podcasts. Now I can safely say that I didn’t know what I was missing.

So, what do I listen to?

Here are my top five favourite podcasts

1. My Dad Wrote a Porno

Okay, I know what you’re thinking, “my dad? Wrote a porno? What the?”. Don’t judge me just yet, not until you’ve listened to an episode or two, because this podcast is gold! And when I say gold I mean crying-with-laughter-on-the-bus-home-every-day gold.

Jamie Morton’s dad wrote a porno (not mine, thank god!), and instead of avoiding it at every cost, he decided to rope in his two friends – James Cooper and BBC1’s Alice Levine – and read the book, chapter by chapter, to their audience every Monday (known as Porno Day).

The crew have just started to read book 2  of “Belinda Blinked”, and I recommend you start downloading the episodes religiously. You won’t regret it, I promise.

2. Serial

This isn’t a new podcast, and you’re more than likely to know all about it by now. But being late to the podcast scene myself, this was the first series recommended to me by a colleague.

Season one follows the journey of Adnan Syed, who was convicted of his girlfriends murder, and series two follows Bowe Bergdahl, a U.S. soldier who walked off his post in Afghanistan and was captured and held by the Taliban for nearly five years.

I won’t say anymore as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who wants to listen, but it’s definitely another one you want to download ASAP!

3. Close Encounters

This is a relatively new podcast, with only three episodes available and, although I have only listened to two of those three episodes for far, they have been absolutely amazing. Delving into the “honest, unguarded conversations a bout sex and relationships” with journalist and sex educator Alix Fox, Close Encounters is produced by the and it’s totes amaze.

Through this podcast you are able to enjoy a number of amazing, real life stories of individual’s past and present loves, some of which include their sexual encounters – no matter how messy. So. Much. Fun!

4. Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!

Going down a completely different avenue now, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! is a fun and fabulous way to keep up to date with the current events – all while trying to figure out what is true and what isn’t. Game on!

A whole hour long – which is perfect for my long bus journeys – the amazing panel that makes up the show includes Peter Sagal (the host), Bill Kurtis (the Judge and Scorekeeper), Carl Kasell ( the Scorekeeper Emeritus), and a number of celebrities, with different people attending each week.

5. Criminal

Based on numerous crimes – the crimes that are a little more complex – Criminal explores fascinating stories of “people who’ve done wrong, been wronged, and/or gotten caught up somewhere in the middle”.

Every story is more interesting than the next and gives listeners real insight into what happened. Told beautifully and with such dignity, it is an addictive series that will have you coming back for more, or it at least had me going back for more – I literally binge-listened to the whole series!

Thanks for the recommendations. I listen to a lot of podcasts, but I haven’t heard most of these. Serial is the only one I’ve listened to.
